First, it depends on a relatively rare and somewhat dialectical use of the verb “light” in the sense of “to get down, descend, land”, so it took a moment to realize what “lit” meant, equivalent to “alighted” or “alit”.
Second, it took a moment to overcome the normal physics of existence to realize we were expected to be left with the image of a bird perched on thin air between two posts which it thinks is one post because of its crossed eyes.
This could be a funny scene in an animated cartoon that first established the bird’s poor vision, but humor doesn’t really work when it takes this much thought to get to the resulting joke. I give it a 2 out of 10.
WWH: Really? Well then, I stand corrected. You sure told me off. Boy, is my face red. I guess I’d better never state an opinion again. Excuse me while I go hide my head in shame. I defer to your superior intellect and judgment. Yep, I guess it was funny after all. How could I not have seen it? Thanks for setting me straight. I feel so small and insignificant now. I guess I’ll just go crawl into the closet and shut the door now.
(You too, Hugh. I just suppose I must just be ilLITerate.)
pschearer, I suggest that the realm of comic reading is just not for you. It shows in every long-winded sentence you write substantiated by the first which stated it took some analysis. Go back to kindergarten and start again you may end up actually enjoying a comic or two.
It appears that I have unintentionally upset others here. Please accept my apologies for doing so. To me the joke was readily apparent, as it is an old standard that has been used countless times in various forms through the years. Again, it was not my intention to ridicule or humiliate anyone and to those whom I inadvertently did I again apologize.
I think pschearer’s explanation wouldn’t have been so bad, except he made a relatively simple thing difficult by going too far in depth and being negative about the comic… And it is funny to think about a cross eyed bird thinking he is on a post when he is actually between two.
I rate the comic 8-10 and his comment a 1-10 for bad taste

To understand this cartoon, takes only to read it, and it’s very funny.

I’m with you on this one hog, if you are literate, you’ll have no trouble understanding it.

I like it! Reminds me of: Late last night upon the stair, I met a man who wasn’t there. He wasn’t there again today. I wish that man would go away!

I appreciated pschearer’s full explanation. I didn’t make the cross-eyed connection.

pschearer- You can come out of the closet- you really are a closet comic! (In a good way!)
I laughed, and I don’t even understand physics. Just the thought of a cross-eyed bird lighting on a non-existant post was hilarious enough for me.

WWH: Your apology is a surprise but I accept it with appreciation.
Now as to our antithetical politics,….
