Alas, the cough isn’t necessary. The evidence is accumulating (e.g., that chorus in Washington State, and several examples since then) that simply sharing the air with someone who has the virus may be enough for you to catch it. And they don’t even have to have symptoms.
That’s why testing — universal testing — is so important.
