My dad’s school was uphill both ways. He lived on a street that has big hills up and down, that street connected to a street just like it and that’s where the school was. He also hiked through several feet of snow when I was born. Don’t believe me? Look up the blizzard of 1978.

My dad couldn’t tell us stories like that. He went to a one room school which is on the very land as the farm he grew up in. Not a long walk and no hills. He could talk about how cold it is, but when I was a kid, we walked to school one day when the temperature was -22°. That was not counting in the chill factor. So nothing he would say about going to school in the cold would impress us.

I walked uphill both ways, backwards, on my hands, with pneumonia, while doing my homework, carrying my brothers on my back, and towing the school bus. But that was only on the cold days.
