On I Love Lucy, when Fred couldn’t understand why Ethel would spend so much on shoes and then complain about them being uncomfortable, Ethel told him, “You don’t buy $16* shoes for comfort, you buy them for looks.”

I never understood the idea of buying shoes that are not comfortable. My motto is “If I can’t walk 10 miles in them comfortably, I am not buying them.” This goes for work and dress shoes too, although the most uncomfortable shoes I ever bought were the ones for my wedding. Two choices – white satin flats or white satin low heels (won’t wear high heels) and both were awful. I sent the entire reception without shoes and after I said that I did not want them the d*rn seamstress who made the gown (5’1" and 183 lbs – had to be a custom gown) sewed small pearls along the bottom hem and I was stepping on them and hurting my feet on them all night. (Husband has since said that I was right about not having a wedding – waste of money and just misery – the two families barely talked for several years after – but HE wanted one. )

I have learned to buy boys shoes. For normal every day I wear Walmart’s boys black skateboard sneakers (I like flat bottom shoes). I have a pair of boys black tie on shoes, also Walmart, for when it is too cold for sneakers and expected to wear them in light rain, but they are not waterproof and husband will spray them for me. Pair of boys hiking boots- again Walmart – for wetter and colder winter days. Children’s plastic snow boots (not sure where I got them – I used to buy shoes at Sears until they switched to only sneakers for boys.) I have a pair of boys plain black slip on shoes that I wear to clients, synagogue and church and will wear to any wedding, bar mitzvah, first communion or confirmation we ever get invited to.

I do have a pair of women’s Keds black leather sneakers with angled belt like piece across them that I bought some 25 years ago for reenacting shoes (1770s). They are pretty comfortable too, which is good as when we go to events I may be on my feet all day – less often since a new member (man) took over standing at the fire cooking from me.
