I’m trying to show you that most of this is unnecessary and self-imposed. You do it because you want to and I let you do what you want. Let me do (or not do) what I want.
And this is why our neighbor of 38 years was divorced from his wife of 43 years last year. Told her he didn’t know what the big deal was about putting a turkey in the oven for Thanksgiving. They had 2 kids plus spouses and grandkids and a set of parents coming to stay for that holiday. He just didn’t get it!
I may have posted this or something similar before – not sure which strips I posted similar on, if duplicate – my apologies.
I am Jewish. Husband is Catholic. So the only holiday that both sides of our family wanted us for was – Thanksgiving. I will add into this – my family ate holiday meals at home or at a parent or sibling of one of my parents homes – we did not eat out.
When we married maybe 5 years and were living in our little 3 room apartment I suggested we invite both families to come to us for Thanksgiving. Husband was concerned both about our cooking a holiday dinner – that would work for both families – and fitting everyone in our apartment. (His sister was away, which helped a bit.) We did find a food place which had hot pickup of turkeys on Thanksgiving and we ordered same from them and I cooked everything else.
We set up two long folding tables up the length of the room – end to end. Somehow my grandfather and his grandmothers ended up sitting together – but even that worked out as did the rest of the meal. We went with “traditional American” no kugel or macaroni with tomato gravy. Worked so well that we continued to do so for decades – until we had bed bugs and stopped having people in. More recently since just for us we cook the turkey instead of buying it cooked as not as much in general being cooked so have use of the oven for same. (My sister and BIL would stop on their way here when all were coming and pickup the cooked turkey for us – prepaid by us.)
We cook together with no problems and each have our things we do.
Annual from husband "Can’t we just eat in the kitchen this year with the regular dishes? Me – where are you going to carve the turkey if we are eating on the kitchen table? Since no answer to same he does not question using the dining room. Why have the good dishes if we don’t use it? (Just because his mom never used hers – my mom did.)

Ben is a great grandpa and a super sweet guy, but his lack of consideration is disappointing. Take your beautiful wife out or order a pizza.☺️
