Similar to hitting the Print button 15 times on the computer if it doesn’t print the first time.

My mom would press all the buttons on the remote – on, off, record, whatever – and the want to change the batteries. Hubby put a washer over the record button and wrapped it in duct tape, but she still outwitted us. When my sister and went over to visit her, one of our chores was to repair the remote – every week.

It is possible to mess up the remote to the point that it won’t respond to most or any presses and not be the batteries. If it controls more than one device and needs a press to switch between devices, it could be set for a different device than the TV or the Controller Box. And sometimes, it may be the device that the remote is controlling has malfunctioned. Or the “line-of-sight” has become obscured. I know these things because a-hem, I looked it up on the Internet. (Not really, they have all happened to me)

Or maybe they have Comcast’s X1 box: mine frequently gets hung up trying to change channels. I’ve had five different service guys from Comcast work on it: replaced all wiring, replaced the box itself, tweaked everything tweakable. I still have to go through a many-clicked dance to get it to change to the channel I want when it stalls out. If we had a clear sightline to the satellites I’d switch to sat TV—but no luck.

After a full day’s work, running errands on the way home, cooking supper, clearing the table (after asking 5 times for help), and making sure the rest of the groceries and dry cleaning made it into the house (after asking 6 times for help)…

A woman would have been up, found the batteries in her stash, made a fresh pot of coffee, collected the dirty dishes strewn around by the lazy males of the household, written a couple of entries on the shopping list (AA batteries), thrown a batch of wash in the dryer, another in the washer, bringing back the dry load to fold, and fixed the remote.

And then listened to her hubby whine about how tired he was and could she get up and get him some dessert.

Later… listening to him whine about how SHE always seems too tired to be affectionate.

It is sometimes necessary to resync our remotes (separate ones for the TV, Bluray, Surround Sound and the Wii.If “turning everything off, then back on again” doesn’t work, next step is to try a battery swap. All our remotes take AA or AAA batteries..Sticky keys can often be fixed (last ditch effort is to wing it across the room into the wall – then start the process from the beginning..If a remote is truly defective, (or broken from bouncing off the wall,) a programmable universal remote is a lot cheaper than a new TV – We haven’t had to buy one yet.

Out of the mouths of babes! Or Dad, here’s a novel idea, GET UP, WALK THAT LONG MILE TO TV SET, AND CHANGE IT ON THE SET ITSELF. You could use the exercise, anyway! :-D

Doesn’t hurt to wipe the snack food grease of the I/R lens every now and then either!
