A book often takes long enough to read that the characters become “friends”. A movie is gone in two hours. Also, a book is only as scary as your life experiences. A ten year old can read a war story and not feel the terror. Those of us who remember Pearl Harbour, 9/11, the London Blitz, will break out n a cold sweat.
Way to ruin the mood, kid. Just when your dad is getting it. I agree with all of the above comments that imply that reading a book is more satisfactory due to its stimulation of the creative parts of the brain that just never seem to get enough of a ‘workout’ (to use Bud’s term!) in daily life.
You may consider it a disadvantage, but the book allows the reader’s imagination to fill in details differently from what a particular movie presents. They may not match your — or any — view of reality, but they can be enjoyed on a more personal level. Something as simple as a character’s voice in a movie can seem incompatible with one’s imagination of the character even if one has never read “the book”. And where the story is a magical fantasy in the first place, I don’t lack of realism is particularly relevant.

There is also the fact the movies often leave out large portions of the book, and frequently alter the author’s intent.
