I don’t understand all the hostility about someone else’s phone. Besides, there are lots of reasons to bring and use a smartphone while outside enjoying nature. Photos for sure, as well as audio recording of birds and other natural sounds. Plus GPS location tracking and elevation recording so you can review your route later. Even temperature, humidity and wind speed can be measured with the right adapters if you have an interest in that. And taking notes on what you saw and did. Don’t limit your abilities by hating your phone.
Take the damned phone from the bratty kid and tell him he only gets it back if he never asks the stupid question for the rest of the hike. If he does, you’ll cancel his phone service.

Why did they let him bring it? It’d be enough for his parents to bring theirs just in case.
