Those are some great Africa pictures your friend took! Where did he/she take them? My hubby & I went to Africa waaaay back in 1986, and saw wildlife in Krueger Park. Hello Rmom, Grog, serenasakitty

Rmom - She and others were on a mission trip and had a couple days off for sightseeing. I’m not sure who took which pictures (were all using small digital camers) and did not show other photos to not show people on the public web. It was in Uganda. There are more photos of the rhinoceros but like one I showed they are blurred (probably taken while running!). To see the rhinoceros a few followed game wardens with rifles (on foot) to find them. Were told to run away as fast as they could if the rhinoceros charged! The game wardens would yell and throw sticks and stones to try to stop them so they wouldn’t have to shoot unless needed. After being charged twice they had to leave!

Sojo - We were on a mission trip too, but went to Swaziland. Krueger Park is a game preserve in South Africa. Our pictures were taken before digital cameras, so we don’t have near as many as we would take if we went now. Plus, my hubby had the camera with the bigger zoom. He likes to take a long time to set up a shot, which doesn’t work well in moving vehicles. (We’d only been married a couple of years then. That was one experience that taught me to have my own camera, instead of trying to share one with him!) Trying to take pictures of animals was like a live action “Where’s Waldo?” game. You look at the vegetation, and try to spot the animals hiding, although you don’t know which animals you might find.

Rmom - “Where’s Waldo” is something I might put into the title of the photo of the large tree. If you zoom in and look closely you can find a leopard.

I saw the sunset you took, that was beautiful. When I had a paper route as a kid a saw all sunrises had decided that they were usually better than sunsets. Today it’s hard to take photos of either one without vapor trails showing in them. (if your good and have the time at least you can remove them with software now!)

Sojo - Considering where you live, you probably have a lot of vapor trails. We get some air traffic overhead, but not as much, so I haven’t done any retouching. Cropping is about the only thing I bother doing with the software, although I know how to do more. ~ Middle Age ~ There are three signs of old age. Bmonk - Well, I can’t do some of those things. No liquor cabinet, and the birthday cake was polished off earlier in the week (thanks to my sons helping!) If I try to run in the house, it would sound more like a herd of charging elephants than little banshees, and I’d probably hurt myself as klutzy as I am. If I try to eat too much ice cream, I’d get an “ice cream headache” before I could eat enough to make me barf. Thankfully, that means there is little chance of having to clean up that kind of mess. I was so thankful when my youngest got old enough to get to a bucket, etc. before barfing.

Sojo - I understand about the extremes, but we’re in a place that gets both below 0 and above 100. I’ve not done too well with the extremes either. I usually run colder (really cold fingers & toes) than most people, but if I get too hot, I’ve been known to faint. Thank goodness most places in KS have central heat & a/c now!

Rmom - Hot weather used to not bother me, I worked on harvest two years from Okla. to Mont., rode bicycles across KS and other places sometimes over 100 miles a day over 100 degrees, also long ditances in freezing temps. Rode the Goldwing two hours at 11 below without problem. Now however that kind of thing would be hard to do if not impossible.

Rmom, I found it hard to adjust to Emonton’s climate when I moved from Montreal. I didn’t wear shorts there often, but one of the natives wore shorts, regardless of conditions from April to October.

It makes me wonder how a Texan would feel under the same circumstances.

Sojo - I started noticing the heat bothering me when I was a teenager. I was working at McDonald’s in the summer and their a/c was broken. Passed out in the middle of taking a customer’s order. So, when I was in high school (same year I think), I carried a box fan from one classroom to the next during the “dog days” of August, because the one box fan per classroom didn’t always get aimed at me. I was extremely popular - everyone wanted to sit by me!

Much has been said today about Texas summers compared to summers elsewhere. Well, I grew up in NW Ohio and spent my latter teen years (and some of my 20’s) in Tucson, AZ. (with occasional visits to much hotter places in Arizona and California), and I’m tempted to tell my fellow Texans, “You folks don’t know what heat is - not if you live in Houston, anyway.” Yes, it’s bad here in Houston, what with the humidity raising the heat index to ridiculous highs, but I have a little story to tell…

Back in July 1993 I attended a conference in Harrisburg, PA. When I got to that area I felt like I was coming home; the terrain and the climate “resonated” with this born-and-bred Buckeye. There was one unforgettable, sweltering day with mostly clear skies and thunderheads scattered here and there. A woman from the Deep South (I forget just where) exclaimed in my presence, “I thought I was USED to this!” With a knowing grin that only a native to that part of the country could wear, I replied, “There’s nothing quite like a Midwestern summer.” :)
