I THINK I remember reading that woodpecker will drum on metal during mating season because it makes more noise which in turn attracts females. Anyone know if that’s right?

Take a lot more than that stop sign post to stop our woody woodpeckers from drilling on metal. I’m completely convinced that they do it to wake me up in the morning.
