Thoreau went and lived in the “wilds” of Concord next to Walden Pond. Except when he was sitting by the fireplace in Emerson’s house which was a stones throw from his Walden Pond hut, especially when it was a little chilly or damp out. Mrs. Emerson regularly fed him. Ralph Waldo provided clothes, ink, writing paper, and all manner of support. While he was writing about what’s missing and wrong with “modern” civilization, he was “borrowing” (without ever returning the favor) from his civilized friends and freely partaking in what he criticized. He was a tax cheat, too. Basically, he was a parasite and a bum. No wonder he became a model for the hippies of the future :P Great writer, though and an avid abolitionist.

They have found tracks of humans at White Sands (NM) that date back over 20,000 years. Much older than the Clovis people who were thought to be the first humans in the Americas.

I was at Gagetown CFB in New Brunswick with my Nat’l Guard detachment back in the early ’80s. We were doing a night exercise in the woods and kept getting tangled up with a black bear and her cub. Happily, she was very patient with us.
