The revelation of HIV didn’t do a thing to slow it down, but it did winnow people who didn’t adopt safer practices. Not that even that stopped a spread thanks to the insidiously subtle and slow onset of actual AIDS.
Methinks Mama Nature was telling us we’d overpopulated and things would have to change. Unfortunately like any bio-weapon, it hurt more innocents than it did those who were part of the problem. And medical science wasn’t exactly too quick to catch on, either. The AMA in particular has a long, tragic history of being slow to adapt to new realities or getting past petty human prejudices.
