When our 11 year old cat (That thought he was a dog) went across the rainbow bridge, our yellow lab had a tough time without her purring friend. She still looks for him every once in a while. Loss is never easy on anyone.
Molly and Natasha waited by the door for Boris for hours. When I started back wearing a fleece we had him use for a blanket for his last few weeks, Molly buried her head in it, even though it had had been washed a few times. They know and they mourn.
The best thing you can do is bring the body home. Set it down and let the others sniff and examine.
I know it sounds weird but it really helps settle the house. They DO understand and being able to know their friend is dead (instead of just vanished) really does bring a bit of closure. Very hard to watch.
All of our fur-babies came home in the past and now we don’t even go to the vet. There are special services where a vet will come to your home to handle the euthanasia. Your baby doesn’t have to endure the stress of the trip to the vet as his/her final moments. Quietly, gently, in your lap if you can handle it.
It is not much more than doing it at the vet’s office and is absolutely worth it for the “benefit” of reduced stress.

One of our cats still rubs on the collar of our dog that passed away a few years ago.

And we have a plot under a pine tree set aside.
