    Not a bad idea to use these words rather than masculine ones when you’re talking about people in general. Half of us ARE female. But when you’re speaking about a specific person, that person IS male or female, so use the appropriate words.

    The idea of replacing all gender-specific words is ludicrous! I especially dislike the use of “person” instead of “man” or “woman”. If woman chairs a committee, she’s a chairWOMAN, not a chair person. Thank heavens that at least some sanity has prevailed, such as police “officer” and fire “fighter”. Some of the compromises are just too silly for words.

    Jane is being generous by attributing “good intentions” to her caller. Experience and observation have proven time and again that ‘well-intentioned’ people are controlling people, and that is reason enough not to trust them.
