Not a bad idea to use these words rather than masculine ones when youâre talking about people in general. Half of us ARE female. But when youâre speaking about a specific person, that person IS male or female, so use the appropriate words.
The idea of replacing all gender-specific words is ludicrous! I especially dislike the use of âpersonâ instead of âmanâ or âwomanâ. If woman chairs a committee, sheâs a chairWOMAN, not a chair person. Thank heavens that at least some sanity has prevailed, such as police âofficerâ and fire âfighterâ. Some of the compromises are just too silly for words.
Jane is being generous by attributing âgood intentionsâ to her caller. Experience and observation have proven time and again that âwell-intentionedâ people are controlling people, and that is reason enough not to trust them.
