Retirement? another 300+ And before anyone tells me to go out into private industry, give me the name of the person that’s going to hire a 60+ year old computer geek at that rate or even what I currently make.
Ditto BAH!’s comment. At one point in time, government jobs did provide better benefits and job security than the private sector, but lower pay. If you took a government job over a private sector job, it was either because you believed in what you were doing and the pay discrepancy did not matter, or because job security and benefits were more important to you than a higher salary. Today, public sector salaries still lag behind private sector salaries, but benefits and job security have decreased dramatically.
Additionally, while there are some government workers who find ways to get paid for doing little or nothing, they are definitely the minority, and you’ll find similar layabouts in large private companies as well. The phenomenon is more a function of the size of an organization than it is one of who is paying the checks.
What dollar value can you place on a job where for practical purposes you cannot be fired compared to one where you can be here today and gone tomorrow? That is worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Also you make the government assumption that all candidates with certain educational qualifications are identical. A possible reason why you work for government and not private industry is you simply aren’t good enough. Tough to admit.
Yo! In California, Public unions rule…No money for retirement benefits?…dig into the general tax fund and John Q citizen is obligated to guarantee public workers retirment and health…it’s called collusion… between union officials and elected officials in return for huge political donations.
This doesn’t apply to federal jobs anymore. With the cuts that went into effect after the debt commission failed to come up with budget cuts, a lot of government jobs are going away.
The crack about government jobs aside, I have to wonder who the applicant thinks he is speaking with. He seems to think that a private sector job and a public sector job are both options that can be offered by this HR department. Of course this could be an outplacement interview – in which case I think I know why he is being let go.
