The last TV we had in manual mode, you had to call up a menu, the a sub-menu and another sub-menu, then you could change the channels. A new remote didn’t help.
I wouldn’t have a clue as to what to touch on the kids’ TV downstairs to change anything beyond the off-on switch.Fortunately mine is an older model that has controls where they can be seen which is a good thing as the remote wore out years ago.

I know a few people that would just watch whatever channel they were stuck on. It’s called the “idiot box” for a reason

I can barely even find the physical buttons on new tv’s. They’re always placed on the side or back, and you can’t read what button does what.

need the remote to mute the commercials. For some bizarre reason, there’s no mute button on the TV itself.

It is just the batteries. Change them.

On the other hand, one of my grandsons, at just 3, could pick up his mother’s iPhone (off) and get Elmo in less than 15 seconds,

Anyone remember the first remotes? They actually caused the channel knob to rotate thru the channels, and they were hard wired to the TV.
