Better check the expiry date on the offer. I’ve seen boxes of whatever that had “special offers” but the offer expired up to a year ago. Makes you wonder how long these things sit around.
too long, in some cases. i used to know a girl who worked in quality control for a cereal company and they did tests to see just how long past the “best before date” a cereal would still be edible and taste okay.
When you are a kid, you do whatever it takes to get the beanie or whatever, then you get it and it is absolute junk. I don’t remember if this storyline goes that way or not.
SLOWFLIER That’s one of the joys of childhood. Then you do it again with Sea Monkeys. Do the same thing, expect different results. The lesson should be taught by your first marriage, but noooo.
I had a similar problem with Trix as a kid. I wanted the plastic submarines that came in the box - put a little baking soda in them to make bubbles come out as the propellant.
My Mom stopped buying them after she figured out I wanted them only for the “toy”. After many boxes - I couldn’t stand the taste but I’d still fish the toy out of the box! Wish I still had those mini-submarines - they’d be worth some $$$!
I have learned to read the “special offers” before I pick out a box of cereal for company. (we don’t eat it) as I have seen it on the shelf with well expired “special offers”! One would think the offer should last longer than the expiry date on the cereal!
Puddleglum 2:
Re: Shredded Ralston; you have an EXCELLENT memory!
Thanks for the correct words…I forgot the “Cowboy Energy”
part … SO important! Now I can really impress all my old
geezer friends.
slowflyer - Yes, you have nailed the storyline here. Calvin believed that the beanie would enable him to fly - or at least levitate. So then he gets mad that it did not meet his expectations and Hobbes, of course, has some philosophical take on the whole thing which Calvin misinterprets again.
My older brother & I would wake up on Saturday morning at 6 AM (when the cartoons started) and each of us would grab one of my Mom’s SALAD bowls, fill it with cereal and we were set to vegetate in front of the boob-tube until noon!
That little Beanie could end up costing a fortune when they add a midnight visit to the emergency room for a stomach pump.
………………………………….
I had a box-top Lone Ranger Ring with a spark-making pistol attached for sending secret morse codes at night to my fellow crime-fighters. My working to get it and then waiting for it in the mail was far more exciting than what I felt when I finally tried to fit the big dumb thing on my tiny finger.
@Yukoner,
Of course the cereal is a year old by the time it gets shipped to the Yukon by dogsled. Mush, you Huskies! :o)
Actually, your point is well taken. The same thing happened in this area occasionally.
@agpeter,
You’re welcome.
Shredded Ralston, Shredded Wheat, and Cream of Wheat were among my favorite cereals.
“Cream of Wheat is so good to eat…” Do you remember “Let’s Pretend” on radio Saturday morning? It ran for twenty years.
Calvin does much pretending, but the show was way before his time.
Wow. That’s some small bowl. Get a serving bowl. It’ll go way faster. Half a box per serving.
I had a pink Frito Bandito eraser. My mother threw it out on me! I still have my Goody Goody magnet on my refrigerator from Freakies cereal, and my glow in the dark Count Chocula tee shirt.
Cereal has a sell by date, but it is over a year long. Canned food has a sell by date too. Because they last so long while sealed, offers often expire before the food does. The important thing to note is while sealed. If you take a box home and open it, don’t expect it to still be good a month later!
Good morning everyone. I’m new to the group but have been enjoying your comments for a couple of weeks since I dicovered this gadget. C & H has always been a favorite of mine.
As a window into who I am, I remember the submersible, baking powder toys, Sky King decoder rings and Mighty Mouse.
Does anybody remember “Super Circus”? It was one of the Saturday morning live action kid shows. They had a Pretty young girl working as ring master (I think) They had a doll as a
box top collector that I saved fifty cents and 5 box tops for. My grandmother never sent the order in. Boy, was I disappointed when i found out.
I had forgotten Battle Creek, Michigan. How is that possible? That’s what life’s trials & tribulations cost us. I sent for an atomic ring - I forget what cereal box top was required - or how many. That’s when I discovered the meaning of eternity - the time between sending for the ring, and when I received it! As we all found out, it was a disappointment - I had to squeeze into a dark closet and wait for my eyes to adjust to the dark, before I could see a few sparkles.

Believe it or not, sour cream does go bad. I usually use mine up before that happens but there have been a couple of rare occasions where I’ve opened the container up to use it and found there was mold in it (yuck!!!!!).
How about this one? Why are croutons so tightly sealed when you buy them? Croutons are made of stale bread! How much more stale are they going to become if they’re not so tightly packaged???
treBSdrawkcaB - your memory of you and your brother gave me a good laugh. Thanks. In terms of today’s cartoon, Calvin is now learning salvation by works it seems. No comment from Hobbes on this, I note…
Wow! Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
And be careful Calvin. A wise father (and a famous Vulcan) once said that wanting something is often more pleasant than having something.

Albert Einstein may have been brilliant but that is a better definition of stupidity than insanity.
Lewreader, it sounds like you are doing similiar things and expecting different results which is possible, and probably happens once in a while for you or you would not keep trying it.
His parents never pay any attention to him unless he’s “bothering” them – and sometimes not even then. One good thing is they will probably never have to buy Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs again.
only thing i ever got as a prize were when they had extra minibooks of the spiderwick chronicles
good thing with those is that they can be passed onto others to enjoy, they don’t break and they didn’t rot your teeth ; )
“Hello, I’ve been reading this strip here for about two years, but I’ve never made a comment. I generally enjoy reading all the comments, though.
