I can do months. I occasionally slip up on years, though.

A GPS would be a lot more helpful than time, though.

I’m guessing that most of the people who still wear watches only do so to show status. Everybody has a phone that tells the time, and clocks in every car and building.

Why yank out a cell phone when I can just look at my wrist.

Perhaps true, but we don’t consider critters who leave a trail of slime or the hindquarters of frogs a “delicacy”, either.

Below ground in the New York subway system, one’s cellphone cannot tell the time.

All Calvin needs is a watch that tells him whether it is a school-holiday or not.

Recently I got a new alarm clock. It’s got the day, date, and temperature as well as the time on the digital readout. It’s 12 hrs slow, and I can’t read the instructions to set it right. They’re in Russian and Chinese.O tempore, o mores.

It seems to me that watches are still very popular, being the most convenient way to tell time. Even my son, who is always glued to his cellphone, wears a watch. He can’t be pulling his phone out to see what time it is while at work, working out at the gym, playing sports, running, or riding his bicycle. As for me, I need my watch since clothing manufacturers refuse to put pockets on women’s clothing (which really annoys me btw). If I always had pockets to put a phone in, I wouldn’t need a watch.

Hey, it’s YOU who do things backward! I bet youalso drive on the wrong side of the road, right?

Then there are the Hungarians, among others, who write dates year-month-day [today is 13,9.27].

I remember wondering why my watch couldn’t adjust for leap years, and then realizing that it didn’t show the year, so presumably it didn’t know what year it was. :)

Today’s Calvin and Hobbes strip is from 1993. Even if Calvin’s watch had displayed the month, a few years later he would have been complaining that it didn’t tell him which millennium he was in.

Hobbes is so tall that, even though he is bending forward in the first panel, he still has to look out the bottom of his eyes to see Calvin’s watch. Hobbes’s face is looking over the top of Calvin’s head.

I have two Casio watches, one is about 25 yrs old and one is at least 15 years old (I lose stuff and find it again). They are still going strong. One day the oldest watch battery gave out and when I saw the blank face, it was like someone had died, there for a minute. The bands give out occasionally but the watches are still going, and I’m not good to them. They get dropped, lost, scraped against stone walls in passing, etc.

At my son’s High School, a kid came in late and had to sign in with name and time. He asked the administrator what time it was and she pointed to a clock on the wall. Apparantly he could not tell what time it was by the hands on the clock so he pulled out his cell phone… sad.

I feel naked without my watch but I use it for tides, temp, barometric pressure, compass, oh yeah and for the time.

For those of you who may possess a CDL, it is illegal to even LOOK at your phone, even to check the time, while you are driving. The fine in NYS is $2750. Not kidding. We all wear watches!

A watch does have another advantage over a cell phone: you need to make the phone “wake” to find the time, while a watch is set up to show the time whenever you glance at it. So, when I am waiting for a specific time to start something, I find it’s much handier to have a watch around.
