Today’s Calvin and Hobbes strip is from September 4, 1989. It is the first day of school, 25 years ago.By 1989, many moms had gone to work outside the home, but there were still some who were fortunate enough to be able to choose whether to pursue a career or stay home with their kids, since their husbands earned enough income to support the family. But, in those days, “supporting the family” often meant owning a smaller home, owning only one car, not eating out very often, not having cable TV, not owning a VCR or video camera, etc. It also meant paying a whole lot less for college and medical expenses. Home computers were not yet required, and there were no mandatory cell phones for every member of the family. And, of course, if one parent could stay home, there were no daycare expenses.A lot has changed in 25 years. It’s amazing how Calvin and Hobbes still seems fresh and applicable to our modern lives, even though Calvin was growing up in a very different world.
