Plus we’ve seen how Calvin is with Rosalyn the babysitter, so just imagine him in daycare.

You just said that to bait people into reacting. You wanna see how many women you can rile up

Mom doesn’t work because Dad makes enough money for them not to have to both work in order to hire a babysitter. This is an old strip.

Either it is the first day of school, or Mom was in the mood for a good old early morning fun.

Today’s Calvin and Hobbes strip is from September 4, 1989. It is the first day of school, 25 years ago.By 1989, many moms had gone to work outside the home, but there were still some who were fortunate enough to be able to choose whether to pursue a career or stay home with their kids, since their husbands earned enough income to support the family. But, in those days, “supporting the family” often meant owning a smaller home, owning only one car, not eating out very often, not having cable TV, not owning a VCR or video camera, etc. It also meant paying a whole lot less for college and medical expenses. Home computers were not yet required, and there were no mandatory cell phones for every member of the family. And, of course, if one parent could stay home, there were no daycare expenses.A lot has changed in 25 years. It’s amazing how Calvin and Hobbes still seems fresh and applicable to our modern lives, even though Calvin was growing up in a very different world.

Mom was a little anxious to start her vacation.

Nowadays, leaving a six-year-old unattended for 2 1/2 hours could get you in serious trouble.

@HobbesWhen seeing Calvin and Hobbes in the late 1980s, I found it extremely strange that a suburban family like Calvin’s would not have cable TV and a VCR. I suppose it depended on where you lived, but everyone I knew had cable TV by the early 1970s, even though the real cable-only channels would not appear for a few years. Cable had more distant channels that wouldn’t be interrupted by a plane flying over or bad weather like antenna reception. It was only in more recent years that digital signals for over-the-air TV and the internet led to some dropping cable TV.

Sham_Poser, my parents didn’t spring for cable until after I left for college in 1994 and we lived in suburbia.

They said she did have a job sometime before Calvin was born, and that it was very stressful and aggravating, but she had gotten used to it so she and Dad decided that she should be the one to stay at home to watch Calvin.

Dad once said: “Mom USED to go to work, but once you came along, someone had to stay home. Your Mom’s job had a lot of stress and aggravation, see, … and she wanted to quit? No, she’d gotten used to it, so we figured she should be the one to..”….http://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1990/10/10

I hate being too early for anything. There is no point in it as all you are doing is sitting/standing around doing nothing.xxx

Calvin once asked his father why his mother was the one who stayed at home to take care of him while his father went to work everyday. His father explained that that before he (Calvin) was born, his mother did work. His parents figured that she would be the best candidate to be the stay at home with Calvin. For a moment, Calvin seemed to think that this was a loving gesture on his mothers part, giving up her career to be at home with him. The moment was short lived as his father went on to explain that her job was highly stressful, and having dealt with such stress, she would therefore be better prepared to deal with Calvin than he (his father) would. It was a funny strip, as they all are.

That’s how it is when you cause trouble.

Maybe Calvin’s parents got to enjoy some time alone and THAT’S why she was dancing.

Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes are waiting for the bus. They have been waiting for the bus for an extended period of time. Hobbes thinks it’s Uncle Max’s fault.
