I haven’t had a full-blown nightmare in quite a while, but I’ll never forget how tight my chest was from the anxiety when I woke up. That’s SO horrible.

My first thought was the pilot for “Star Trek”, before William Shatner. Here is a snapshot with then Captain Pike (before Captain Kirk)…

Not really a lot of difference between what humans do directly with gene manipulation and what we have always done by way of selection. Dogs, cats, corn, and myriad other animals and farm crops all are arrived at by a less direct, but by no means less effective, forms or gene manipulation. Likewise, this is how evolution works, by making changes in the genome. Which is not to say that we couldn’t really screw things up with direct genetic modification. Like anything else of consequential nature, forethought and oversight are important.

I was older when I first saw it and it STILL scared the heck out of me. One of my favorite 1950s sci-fi movies.

With all the havoc Calvin wreaks / threatens, I always like it when something brings him up short like this. ;-)

The earliest such story that I know of was They, by Robert Heinlein, written in 1941, and reprinted in various collections, including 6 X H and The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag. See also Of Men and Monsters, by William Tenn.

Evolution doesn’t have a plan. Random mutations are tried and either succeed or fail.“We are operating contrary to evolution with self killing seeds for one. Not advantageous for anything but the seed sellers.”With that , I cannot argue.

I always wondered whether the California Condor puppets at the San Diego Safari Park worked on the chicks of that protected species.

I think Mom may forget exactly where the “proof” of her being Mom is some days!!
