You weren’t more tolerant, you just weren’t aware of oblique aspersions.See, you’re getting smarter.

If we could only see ourselves as others see us, sometimes we’d want to shun ourselves. The slow erosion and transmutation of daily “reality” keeps us interested, and it also allows us to change our script and modify our characters. It’s helpful to have a stuffed tiger around who can drop subtle hints.

I’m not very tolerant of oblique aspersions either, and it’s true people change whether they want to or not.

Say whatever, your present intolerance is not going to harm Hobbes. You dare not…

“Casting aspersions” goes right back to the Old Testament, when the high priest would sprinkle the people with water using a bunch of hyssop. That’s what “aspersion” means—sprinkling.

Funny how in panel 4, Calvin looks a lot like those little cartoon character kids urinating on a (insert auto brand here) that I see outlined on the backs of vehicles, mostly pickups, everywhere I go.

Calvin usually doesn’t use complex vocabulary when talking to his parents or Susie. But when he’s with Hobbes, he has to try to come up to Hobbes’s level.

@orinoco womble,I ditto frugalnotcheap’s comment!I wonder whether the people became “stiff-necked” from trying to evade all those aspersions the high priest was casting on them, especially if they were oblique. :o)

I doubt that Calvin would tolerate calumnious remarks, either. Since Calvin is rather thin-skinned, stinging comments are unacceptable.

You are probably correct in that assumption. Sorry if I’ve offended, it was in jest.

I used to use vegetables as fish bait, until people complained that I was casting asparagus.

I think it’s more of how life has been oblique.

If I was as smart as a six year old, I might have some idea what he was talking about.
