I’ve lived in an unheated apartment most of my life. It’s currently 61ºF in here; the building is uninsulated and the floors terrazo. You learn to dress warm and drink a lot of herb tea. Now, when I go into centrally-heated buildings, I’m far too warm.

By the way, Dad, you’re wrong. The purpose of adversity is not to build character but to reveal it. Job was already “a perfect man” in God’s eyes before He gave Satan permission to test him. Job’s trials didn’t serve to build his character but to reveal it to himself and to those around him. In other words, it was all about teaching Job something about Job, not about improving him.

@LeadingEdge, in fairness to your wife, air-conditioning and indoor heating feel very different. I think it’s got something to do with humidity. During the summer I feel fairly comfortable with the thermostat at 70, and I can take it up to about 72 during the day with a ceiling fan running. During winter, I’d feel like I was in an oven at those temperatures. I’m more like your wife – 68 degrees feels a little uncomfortable in full heat, so I’ll often turn it down to 66 or 67. 64 seems a little chilly, though.

Yesterday Calvin was an environmentalist. With a drop of 20 degrees he becomes a comfortablist. Unlike us, of course.

had uncle who kept his house 100° or more hot during even summer time he had nerve issues and was always cold, not sure what his widow done with so much heat.

My own mom is too cold blooded to try for 68° she has floor furnace winter setting for control is 85° if not for 90°. My brother-in-law burns wood for heat. For us easier to wear layers or sweaters.

Does Dad think every bad thing builds character? Does falling off a building build character? Let’s drop him off one and find out.

In our home we have zoned climate control. In Winter the thermostats are set to drop to 62 F at night, and up to 70 F during the day. Similarly, during Summer they are at 78 F during the day, and up to 85 F at night!

It saves some energy and of course, $$! You get used to it…

Malls and folks cool to 60, even in Arizona, in the summer, then crank it to 80 in winter, tthat’s the crazy. With nerve problems myself, around 70-72 is nice as too hot or too cold is painful, and is my wife who complains too hot if above freezng, menopause lasts forever, like nerve disorders for guys.

Watterson has been on a roll the last few days on envioronmental reality btw. Despite our individual comfort zones in discussions or “personal spaces”, sometimes small sacrifices for the greater good, ARE in our own long-term best interests. He’s been reminding me just how dangerous the mentality, religious perspective, and politics of the James Watt folks have become in this country. “Use it ‘cause we’re gon’na lose it anyway” isn’t sound thought process.

A lorry splashed me this morning. It drove into a great big puddle and the water went flying out all over me.Yes, I did see the puddle beforehand and did my best to avoid it.I was shivering for about half an hour.xxx

Dad is merely tweaking Calvin with the “character building” excuse, just to see his reaction. If he wanted Calvin’s approval, he would have told him “it puts hair on your chest.”

Back when i worked in administrative at a regional shopping mall, i was informed that 72F (22C) took the least amount of power to maintain in the mall., i tested that at home for a month, and she was right! i still keep it at that temp.
