I love the way his mother is holding Calvin in the fourth panel. It just shows that no matter how aggravating he can be his mother still loves him and in times of crisis Calvin still turns to his parents for support.
A headlight on the handlebars would be the finishing touch. A single eye glowing dimly from the depths of the closet. “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of bikes? The Shadow (aka Calvin) knows. WAHAHHAHHAH!”
And here’s a thought. Maybe Hobbes brought the bike up the stairs and hid it in the closet. And now he’s in the corner somewhere snickering (yes, tigers can snicker) at Calvin’s night terrors. Never trust a tiger.
Once again, the line between Calvin’s imagination and reality is blurred. How did he get the bicycle upstairs and into his closet without being noticed?
This strip certainly has a creepy vibe, especially the second panel. Looks like this happens somewhere between 8 and 11 PM, given that the Mom is still wearing her regular clothes instead of her nightgown.
Perhaps this story arc is much older than we thought. Could William Shatner have portrayed Calvin’s story, as the adult who was a plane passenger, when he was trying to tell the air crew that there is something on the wing tearing off pieces of it? Submitted for your approval…

You’d have thought Mom and Dad would have noticed Calvin bringing a bike upstairs. It would have been noisy.

Better an evil bicycle hiding in the closet than an evil clown.

Taming the wild bicycle takes patiance and courage. Worth it though. Be brave Calvin.

This strip hits close to home. When I was a kid, after a nightmare about a musical toy coming to life, I was scared to death of it.

Most of his adventures, positive or negative, seem like an active imagination. This one… this one smacks of full blown mental illness.
