Irving: Who are all these people on your wedding guest list?? Cathy: They're my best friends! I just never have time to talk to any of them. Irving: How can they be best friends if you never talk? Cathy: They're best friends because they don't have time to talk, either! Irving: Why bother inviting them to the wedding? Cathy: Are you kidding?? If I didn't invite them, they'd never talk to me!! Irving: ("Eight months before wedding: Quit asking the bride questions.")
Not quite the same all over Canada. Not sure of the other provinces but I know Quebec ends a week earlier in June and starts the last week in August. When I was a wee lad I always thought that we should be off June and July since by the end of August the weather – and the water temperatures – were almost too cold to go swimming. I too have friends that I don’t talk to for long periods of time. In one case it was 10 years. From the day of his wedding to the day he walked away from it his wife would not let him talk to his old friends – she made him new ones. The day he called to say ‘Hi’ it was as if that 10 years did not matter. I just wish I could talk to him again – cancer took him 4 years ago. Well, I still talk to him, he just doesn’t answer.
