See, that’s a problem for me. What do participation trophies reward, being there? It doesn’t teach kids the harsh realty that there are winners and losers in every game. It’s learning how to win or lose graciously that is important, and to improve yourself to win the next one.

Never got a trophy, but I think I got something much better. Coach singled me out at the end of season awards as the player who was there and ready to do what the coach wanted done at whichever position he put me in. And he was able to count on me to do my best whenever he put me in, and not hassle him or others when I did not get put into the game. His short speech give me a guide and lesson that has worked well for me most of the time over the past 60 + years. His son and some of the other “Star” players were much more “Me, Me, Me First” and I guess the difference showed, though I never even thought about it until the coach mentioned it to everyone.

Bailey, it’s okay if you’re a lousy player. What matters is that you did everything you could to prove yourself to be a viable asset to the team. Besides, there’s always room for improvement and you’ve got Jack and Mondo to coach you for next season. Then, maybe you’ll get a trophy and win.

Apparently, he didn’t learn much from his experience and that trophy shouldn’t really mean too much either…..
