I think that the new trend for awhile has been a switch from rice to birdseed. I think is was originally an idea from church janitors, who got tired of the sometimes tedious job of trying to clean up all of those tiny grains of rice. It save the church a lot of money in cleanup cost also.

Rice is supposed to be bad for the birds, so . . .birdseed.

Many birds are seed/grain eaters and rice is just another grain. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/birdrice.asp

Birdseed attracts the birds better than rice. Then we shoot ’em for dinner at the reception!

pigeons will literally EXPLODE if they eat too much rice, even hurting any other birds or people nearby. Pray to God the terrorists never find out.
