GoComics Creator Resolutions for 2019!
by Charlie UpchurchYour favorite comic creators are just like you — setting resolutions and breaking them left and right. Find out what Nancy, Breaking Cat News, Prickly City, and many other comic artists are trying to do better this year ... and sometimes have already failed at.
Comic celebrities: They're just like us!
Nancy creator Olivia Jaimes simply said, "My New Year’s resolution is to be more cryptic and mysterious." We have to wonder if she's not secretly stewing over something after we read her resolution comic ...
Scott Stantis said, "As far as the resolutions in Prickly City go, I address the frighteningly quick way we fail them. You know what I'm talking about: 'I'm going to get up early and go to the gym (this one is usually one and done), watch what I eat, (this one can last as long as 36 hours if there isn't a special going on at Taco Bell), I am going to live healthier, (until a friend suggests meeting at happy hour).’ I would say we are at least being brave in the attempt, but I couldn't keep a straight face saying it ..."
Connie Sun wants to bring more light into her life: "Every year, I resolve to loosen up and have more fun because, historically, I am bad at this."
Half of the Baldo duo, Hector Cantú, said, "Resolutions are so much easier when your characters are making 'em! I'm pretty lousy with resolutions. I started trying to eat healthier a few months back, so I guess my resolution is to continue my pre-New Year's resolution."
Georgia Dunn of Breaking Cat News and Swan Eaters fame shares her resolution:
"I enjoy coming up with resolutions every year. Some take easier than others ... This year I want to get a little more active. I'm mostly happy with my body, but I know I could use an injection of regular exercise into my routine to keep myself healthy. This year, the BCN crew's resolution mirrors my own — they are hoping to get back into their old fitness routine, 'the 2 a.m. running of the cats.'"
Rob Harrell, of Adam@Home, shared his perpetual resolution. "I'll — once again — be resolving to get healthier. Eat better. Lose some weight. Stop with the Cheetos. Hopefully I'll do better than Adam."
Steve Ogden of Magnificatz has this to say about resolutions:
"I'm very driven to get better at this comic-making stuff, so pretty much every night, I go to bed promising myself I'll do better tomorrow. Ringing in each new day at midnight with desperate promises of self-improvement, in a way, every night is like New Year's Eve for me (just without the drunken regret and no hangover the next day!)"
Jan Eliot of Stone Soup is a little jaded about resolutions:
"This strip perfectly reflects my sentiments about resolutions! Mostly, they are completely pointless. The optimist in me does experience a brief feeling of hope at the beginning of each new year, enjoying the sense of a fresh beginning. It’s very uplifting! And then Trump starts tweeting and I drop like a thud back to earth. So, my secret resolution, one I can live up to year after year, is to buy more plane tickets so I can travel to other countries and experience their politics instead, knowing those are not my problems. Distance brings perspective on all things!"
Finally, Mike Baldwin of Cornered fame can't take resolutions seriously:
"Oh, yes, bad habits and good intentions. We got 'em, but deciding on a New Year's resolutions right after the holiday season of excess feels like a bit of a setup for failure – unless you game the system. So that's what I do. With that in mind, here's a few of mine:
I resolve not to pressure my cat into playing Frisbee. Clearly, neither of us has the patience for it anymore, and she throws too hard. I've lost teeth.
Exercise more. Especially my right to say no while nodding up and down — instead of simply admitting that I don't understand the question.
And finally, spend less time in my head and more time in the Now. Or Now. No, Now. OK, not right Now because that was seven words ago, let's try the Now that's coming up in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 … Happy New Year!"
Jeff Corriveau, creator of DeFlocked, says "My resolution is to start using my dominant hand to draw my strips."
