I was having the same thought as some of you, especially with the line that he has been trying to get home for a long time. That is the most famous urban legend, where someone picks up a teenage hitchhiker, she is cold, so he loans her his sweater. He drops her off, and remembers his sweater, and rings the doorbell, only to find out from her parents she has been dead for several years. Some add to the story that they go to the cemetery, and his sweater is on her headstone.
