I noticed that, too, axe-grinder. I know that it’s been speculated that GA started in the Chicago-land area, but like many I feel as though the setting of the strip seems much more Southern.
In any case, I’d rather live in a place as generous and big-hearted as Gasoline Alley than that jungle in Lord of the Flies, a book that for some reason came to mind yesterday..
Joe sure does have the right to post what he wants, and as long as he wants to boast about his service exploits, in long essays and multiple posts, the many veterans who don’t feel the need to brag or score points for having done their duty are going to have their own thoughts on the matter.
Me, I don’t feel the need to ramble on about my duty posts, my DD-214, how I was a grunt who got to boss around sergeants or any other such nonsense.
Joe, word of advice: start a blog or something. Those folks who want to read your life story can go over there and do that. Those of us who thought we were reading comments about a comic strip we like instead of the “Joe Show” can do that too.
And beyond that, about Joe’s right to ramble on: just because we have the legal right to pick our nose in public, fart and belch in a job interview, go shirtless in church or shout obscenities on the sidewalk doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to do it!
I don’t remember who or where but someone in the last couple of days asked Joe about his military service. Joe was just answering questions that were asked of him.
Regarding the apparently southern nature of a number of the characters on GA: remember that Chicago is not all there is to the state of Illinois. The southern parts of both Illinois and Indiana are a lot more like Kentucky than you might imagine. A. Lincoln, born in Kentucky, moved first to Indiana and then to Illinois, and a lot of others took more or less that same migratory path.
I’m sorry I ranted yesterday. I still believe that honoring our Vets may be a better way of spending the tax dollar than paying ungrateful non-producers who think the government is a free check. What ever happened to:
For the umpteenth time, those who are bored with Joe’s posts, just scroll past them! That takes a lot less time than posting to complain about them. He’s an older man who enjoys reminiscing so what’s wrong with that?
As for the world ending in 2012, the way things are going it could be sooner than that.
My understanding is that this is not being Government Funded, But is a campain to raise the money from private donors. So watch for fund raisers in your area. If you’re not for the Museum don’t donate. and it won’t cost you any money. Those of us for it will help build the Museum and go enjoy it. And even if you are against it, I hope you come visit the Museum after it is completed and bring your children and grandchildren

Maybe this is Joe’s social network. Too bad the cool kids decided it would be fun to gang up on him at recess….
It does seem strange to me that people who claim to understand his problems proceed from diagnosis to attacking. People I admire would be more likely moved to generosity.
CHUBSYUBSY Could I please borrow your copy of the Constitution. Mine says something about defence and interstate commerce, with all other powers left to the states. Oh it does say something about the general welfare. Let me find my Funk and Wagnalls and see if the word general has changed in 250 years.
I say let’s act like grown-ups, Norman. You are behaving childishly, when you should know better. You obviously had some education. You’ve mentioned working with people with limited abilities and resources before, and I can’t fathom why that experience did not make you more charitable to others. Why not reflect on what you know about what some people contend with in life?
As for personal attacks, you have a long record and no credibility in that area, no matter how you change your name. You literally had a clean slate after your exile. But when you spend your time here ragging on someone, I’m calling that bully behavior. Same Norman, different name.

Before long we will need a World War III commemoration for the Gasoline Alley commenters.
