Boy: Tell us, Dill! Tell us about the Supply Closet! What was it like in there? Dill: It was... words alone cannot... the laws of physics and perspective did not apply. Alice: It was a mess, huh?
Petey, Alice is merely suggesting the pathos of least resistance…
I can see Petey 60 years from now.. He’ll never leave the house, just sitting in his bed wearing the same clothes and reading the same comic book day after day after day, the stuffed gila monster gathering dust like Miss Havisham’s wedding cake in Great Expectations.
…sniff…
Wait a minute, that’s what Petey was already like, before he bought the gila monster…
It makes perfect adolescent logic (ill or otherwise). Petey gets to feel the weight of missed opportunities, sing songs about lives of quiet desperation, read poems about paths not taken AND feel both the victim of an unfair world, but also of himself. The real beauty of this one is that SIMULTANEOUSLY he gets to HARASS his little sister!
