I heard a TV discussion yesterday that from the point of view of when the obligations of family and career become dominant in one’s life, middle age now begins at 35!
(Two movie scenes:
1950 “Sunset Boulevard”, in which Gloria Swanson’s boy-toy says, “Fifty’s not old”, and the entire audience knows he’s lying through his teeth.
1961 “Goodbye Again”, in which Ingrid Bergman screams at her young lover, “I’m old! I’m old! I’m forty!”)

He’s right. As in, “I spent over $600 on you people last Christmas, but next time I’m going to spend only 50.”

Or Meg Ryan, in “When Harry Met Sally” crying because she’s going to be 40….someday.

50 is not as old as it used to be … maybe 50 is the new 40?
