Transcript:
Joey: This job bites! It's a total dead end! Baldo: Uh... Joey... uh... Mr. Rod has promoted me to assistant manager... Baldo: And he wants me to lay you off. Joey: Are you kidding me? This is the best job ever! I was gonna retire here!!
der·o·gate (dr-gt)
v. der·o·gat·ed, der·o·gat·ing, der·o·gates
v.intr.
To take away; detract: an error that will derogate from your reputation.
To deviate from a standard or expectation; go astray.
v.tr.
To disparage; belittle. See Synonyms at decry.
ej what are you? a sadist? I hope I will never have an employer like you. & thanks for the vocab lesson people, didn’t know reading funnies can be so educational.
My take on this: Mr. Rod noticed the dip in revenues started exactly after he promoted Joey to Assistant Manager–ergo, he figured Joey needed to go first (along with some others for “revenue correction”).
Too bad for Joey So be it! He will not, can not, and shall not be retired from that auto shop. He has to find the odd job. Maybe he has to apply for stinky garbage carrier to work! Stupid and brown nose dude! Take a hike, Joey!

Ok, now you’re asst mgr, and you get to do the dirty work. Mr. Rod should be telling Joey this in person.

Baldo’s job already stinks - he has to fire someone his first day! Unfortunately, I’d probably enjoy that more than I should.

“You never saw in the strip Joey missing work” - as the old song said, “How can I miss you if you don’t go away?”
