Actually, that guilt can be a pretty nasty thing. When grandma had her stroke, I was on the other side of the state, 300 miles away. All I kept thinking was, if I hadn’t gone to see my in-laws, she’d still be ok. In reality, there wasn’t anything I could have done if I had been here.

bigg - As a person who has fainted several times from a sudden drop in blood pressure (and it runs in my family) - that condition is NOT caused by having high blood pressure. We have normal blood pressure most of the time, but under certain conditions, that can drop suddenly, which causes fainting. Our doctors tell us that we need to eat MORE salt!

I do find it interesting that Papi fell forward. When I’ve fainted, I’ve always fallen backwards. So did my mom the one time I witnessed her fainting.

LOL, Nice try “Dr. Baldo” @ RRAmom, 3 times in my adult life, I fainted, 2 as after effects of serious head injury and once to extreme dehydration; did face plants all 3 times. Psst; also cookin up a mess of my “specially seasoned” home fries for ya. You won’t need extra salt for a lonnnngggg time, LOL.

RRAmom, want the recipe to my mother-in-laws baked potato slices? That’ll meet your salt quotient big time.

Being ex-Navy, I’ve seen more than a few people faint because they locked their knees while at attention, causing low blood pressure. They always went over backwards. My wife’s sister’s first husband did that at their wedding…ended up in the hospital with a fractured skull. Went over backwards, down the altar stairs.

If Sergio has the diabetic or blood pressure either, he better get well with the kind of medications for diabetic or blood pressure. I will keep praying for him to get better and stand his feet on the ground strongly. :-)

hey Carlos where are You?

bigg - My bp tends to drop dramatically (leading to a faint if I don’t lay down first) after a stressful event. My bp does go up into the high category during stress, but when it is over and I calm down, I really calm down. (My nurse during my last childbirth said she’d never seen anyone relax so much between contractions. I probably would have fainted, if I hadn’t already been lying down.) I have a friend with severe diabetes, so I am well aware that condition can cause one to pass out.
JonD - Well, my center of gravity is probably on my backside, so I suppose the distribution of weight on a body might affect the direction they fall. I guess I’m glad I fall backward, as the goose egg on the back of my head I got from one faint would have been much worse to have on my face!

Thanks for all the offers of recipes with salt! Potatoes are the main thing I could never learn to eat without salt. (This was before I found out I’m supposed to eat more salt.) My family usually gets enough salt, if we aren’t forced to eat a “heart healthy” diet. That was how we found out about our genetic condition - Mom had a stroke, so the medical places always served her food w/o salt, and she kept collapsing. My brother was in for a heart cath, and his cardiologist told him to eat more salt. So now if we go into the hospital, we know to bring a salt shaker along! You can post your recipes, if you like, they do sound good.

Re: which direction people fall when they pass out:
Watch any America’s Funniest Home Videos montages of grooms/brides passing out at weddings (There are quite a few, I assure you).
People have been known to fall either way. It depends on a few factors such as: what you were doing at the time (i.e. getting up from a chair, walking, bending over, standing still, etc.), your center of balance (dependent upon your weight/height), whether you simply pass out all at once, or things got fuzzy/black/spinning gradually (which happens rather frequently to my hub’s grandma, who is hypoglycemic. She gets vertigo when she stands up and stumbles a few steps before falling forward.).
So it works both ways.
RRAmom, I’ll hafta get the recipe from Hubs. Post it later!

This happened to my brother two years ago, the doctors never found out why. He hasn’t fainted since though, so that is good.

Oven Potatoes:
1 stick butter (enough for four people. Decrease to meet your serving needs)
Lowry’s seasoning (quantity varies by taste. Play with it a while and find what works for you)
1 potato per person largely diced (1/2” cubes or thereabouts)
(Notice we’re not real specific on recipes in this family)
Preheat oven to 400. Combine ingredients in foil lined pan and cover with more foil.
Bake for 1/2 for 1 potato, or a little over an hour to 90 minutes for multiple potatoes. (Check every 15 minutes or so for potato tenderness, just like any other baked potato, the knife/fork should slide in and out easily.)
Serve (with steak is best, bthough hot wings work too. They’re pretty good by themselves with hot sauce or ketchup.) (or so my hubby says. hot sauce, blech!)

Thanks Librarian! Sounds yummy!
Johnnydoc - Did they do a “tilt table test” on your brother? Fairly inexpensive test, but seems to be difficult to get the doctor to order it done. The medical name of the condition that runs in our family is called “neurocardiogenic syncope” - WebMD has one article on it, I haven’t looked at any other sites lately, but you might see if your brother has the symptoms.

They checked him for everything, and found a mild form of scoliosis, (unrelated). Everything else seemed fine, thank goodness.
