Thanks for bringing back memories of when people stood together…well, except for that guy…….But back in day, the government and unions would both provide and mend the safety net…..now no one does…
“Brothers and Sisters, we must now hang together, for surely, if not, you will Hang individually.” ATU1177 steward, during Virginia’s attempt to make union affiliated employees setting foot on government property a criminal act.
@simpsonfan2Actually, the reason the strike didn’t happen is that each human cannonball was afraid they would be replaced by someone of a higher calibre.
“Sturmmi14,” why do you think business managers, and other property owners (and their sycophants) are so hostile to labor unions? Despite all the rhetoric about wages and the like, it’s not about money – and never has been. It’s really all about power, the sharing of. Money, after a point, is simply a means of keeping score. (After all, when it comes to creature comforts, what can an individual buy of any real worth with $20,000,000 that he can’t with $10,000,000? Only bigger and more, but usually not even marginally better.) When a company, of any size, has the employees organized into a union, what the company’s owners effectively have is an additional partner. I’ve yet to meet a business owner who wasn’t resentful of any outside entity, be it government, union, other businesses, or even deity (through a church and scripture) giving limits on how to manage.`As an example, Henry Ford was famous in 1914 for paying his workers the munificent sum of at least $5.00 a day (and in 1914 it was munificent.) Of course, other businessmen denounced Ford as, among other designations, a “mad socialist.” (Then as now, most of those who denounce something as “socialist” don’t really know what they’re talking about.) Ford did this for two major reasons: to increase worker productivity and reduce labor turnover (both of which were realized) and, admittedly by him, to justify intruding into the lives and habits of his workers (for their good, you understand.) Perhaps not surprisingly, Ford proved to be the most hostile of the automobile manufacturers to union organization. Ford even began to take steps to break up Ford Motors rather than submit to unionization of the workers, until his family intervened. In the end, Ford showed himself as having the same mindset as the kindly ’ole master of the plantation, treating his slaves oh so well, but personally offended when they ran off anyway.
Very well said. I appreciate both your posts. I have worked both union and non-union jobs. As a non-union worker I was expected to do my best and compensated accordingly. As a union worker I was told (literally) by the union NOT to do my best, because it would up the rate for those “unable to keep up”. This is essentially telling me to work for less pay in order for someone else to keep a job they cannot handle efficiently.

in some walmarts in the U.S. there is going to be a walk out strike on black friday so some of you might go to your walmart and won’t be able to shop.

Actually, in a right to work state like Virginia, you could have Union workers beside non union workers. This has…problematic moments.C.

We tolerate public unions… we should encourage unionization of the armed forces too. We can see the same beneficial outcome.

Exactly true – Night-Gaunt49. Maybe it would better be titled “The Dangers of Crossing a Picket Line”

If I had $1 for every bad pun ever submitted in the comments section of all the online comics, then I’d have enough money to be part of the 1%
