If you’re going to go through life as a chained-up dog, a new chain is a really big deal! So I understand Andy’s excitement! I guess neither Rat nor Pig gets it.
Interesting comment just after an election…I ‘get’ that, although we worked pretty damn hard to shape the results… in spite of my COMPARATIVE happiness about the result, there are yet a lot of unnecessary restrictions…social/political life ain’t perfect yet, right?
I don’t do this often, but here’s a nitpick about the strip:When Andy was first introduced, he was always tugging at his chain, hoping to weaken and eventually break it so that he’d be free. It doesn’t make sense that he’d be happy about getting a new chain, unless he’s lost his mind.
Please Steph, develop a brief strip series where Andy finds a home and is freed from the chain forever. It would be a nice statement from a widely read (wildly funny) strip.
It was a joke … but pedantry shall be met with same.-Jonah 1:17: the Bible says Jonah was swallowed by a “great fish.” Type unspecified. Still pretty optimistic!
Fences usually look different when viewed from the other side, so a superficial look at the fence suggests Pig and Rat just hopped over it. However, if you examine the fence more closely you see that the single and double line markings occur in pairs in the first panel, but they alternate in the second panel. The third panel adds more confusion, the lines alternate at the left but occur in pairs at the right. This suggests a variety of cartoon physics: mutability of appearance. Or perhaps Stephen is testing the observational powers of his readers…

Either there’s a hill on both sides of the fence or they decided to hop over it.

Jonah, from the belly of a big fish, thanked God for saving him. Really? He’s grateful for being swallowed by a fish? Now, that’s optimism!
