My first car was a ‘51 Buick with a straight eight engine and a dyna-flow transmission. It didn’t have air conditioning but the holes rusted through the floorboards provided good air flow. There were the usual portholes in the side but they didn’t duct the exhaust . . . that was ducted through the holes in the muffler right under the passenger compartment. The carbon monoxide from the muffler came in the holes in the floor so you had to drive with the windows down no matter what kind of weather. Paid fifty bucks for that car.
My first car cost 125.00: an MGA coupe. It came with a spare engine in a box. It was still running years later. I stopped driving it when the driver’s door fell off.
Beater – a car so bad the owner despises it for eroding their status, so they treat it poorly, high speed, low / no maintenance, cleaning, accident repair.

A ‘beater’ is something to get one through the winters’ salty roads and inevitable accidents with ‘newbies’ behind the wheel, so one can break out their ‘status car’ in the spring.. Same goes for Bikers and the first ride of the season, even though the next day will have 8 inches of snow on the roads!

Ya gets what ya pays for, Cosmo. If you’re going to go that route, you’re better off with what you got.

If it weren’t for Ford and Harley-Davidson, I wouldn’t know which end of a wrench to use today.
