You guys who didn’t enjoy this football season’s storyline, that’s fine. You guys who think Jack Berrill’s old-school stuff was superior to Neal Rubin’s, you’re delusional. Neal’s been fun these last few years, so lighten up, man.
My only real beef with this story was Doyle Dane. I agree with Cliff, Neal’s stories are pretty good. But this one would have been more plausible without Doyle’s “marketing campaign.” Kid comes from Ireland, finds out he has some football talent, becomes popular, gets a swelled head, then gets taken down a peg or two — it could all happen on its own. No machinations necessary.
Everybody complains but everybody keeps coming back- including me. P3 is so bad I’m boycotting my bottle of Jameson’s this week-end though. Pure blarney.
The story was OK but Doyle made NO sense at all. He was treated as a joke by the other kids, yet Terry took his advice. That’s the biggest part that was ridiculous.
Neal’s doing fine with the strip, glad he’s in charge. That said, this storyline was laden with lamenosity. But hope springs eternal in the heart of a Thorpalohic, and I’ll keep coming back morning after morning!
Been following Gil Thorp since 1978 so I’m all in. As I stated, an occasional championship would be nice, including the we overcame advesity to get there. Afterall, there’s nothing more American than beating adversity and pulling together as a team to reach goals. Even The Milford Knight learned a valuable Cosby Kids leason. Hey, Hey, Hey!
Actually anyone who feels the older Gil stories were better has the same right to post on here as Cliff does. Anyone who feels differently is delusional to borrow an insulting phrase.
I’ve been reading Gil for 46 of its 54 years. I’ll read it as long as it runs. However, the Berrill storylines were far superior to the current ones. Ideally only two new panels should be introduced each day, with the first of each day a restatement of the previous days P3. Fewer characters were used in a storyline with fewer confusing intertwined characters who never look the same twice and may not appear twice within weeks. I have all the Gil Thorp strip collections and reviewing any of the stories there you can see the night and day difference between a well constructed storyline and what we’re seeing here.
