Silly unicorn,there is nothing magical about the ability to read your own thoughts.Horses can become quite proficient in reading human thoughts. One’s body reacts to your thoughts and emotions in expressions and mannerisms that horses learn to read. A highly trained and disciplined monk might be able to fool a horse, but few ordinary people can. When riding, a horse can read your body reactions even better through direct physical contact. I would expect a unicorn with the aid of magic to be able to do at least as well.

Riding effectively requires some mental discipline. If you are nervous or scared the horse will become nervous or scared. If you are confident and calm the horse will become confident and calm.
