Morning all! Or evening, or whatever it is wherever you are….
I didn’t realise I’d be kept away from the comics so much of today…..anything exciting happen on Ballard St. while I was gone?I see that dam fool Gene was driving again.Essex can make all the excuses he wants for his buddy… But I’m tired of his tire tracks in my salon window box.Poor petunias never knew what hit ’em.
Gotta put all this stuff away at the salon and then I’ll be down to the Tiki.
Monkeee! I’ll be there shortly to check on the night crew…. never fear!
Bev — did you see my instructions in re Chrome spell check?
Just read through the rest of yesterday’s comments and you didn’t say…
Hey, I tried for years to hate that Boy but I just can’t, cos his music still drifts through my mind. Some earworms drive me crazy, but if you mean the song I think, that one is pleasing, however unwilling I may be to think so.Karma Chameleon
I nurse a shot of good Scotch for a long time… love the warmth when I sip it slowly.I know that goes against the grain of a lot of “Down yer neck!” style drinkers.
Yeah… and the converse is, with a good, mellow liquor that was cured and aged so carefully, it’s a waste NOT to savor it…. or even taste it going down.
@Dazz….yesterday..Thanks for the recipes. I don’t remember mentioning nut allergies, I’m fine in that respect. I bought some sticky toffee pudding cheese which I’m going to try to make ice cream with.
“Gene’s driving is a complete surprise to Ted.” Well, yes….I should say it is. After all, Ted was expecting his wife, Eugenia, to drive him to the Ballard St. Orthopedic Clinic and Dry Cleaners this morning — just two blocks down and around the corner… He was completely unprepared to witness her transformation into “Gene”, the teen who loves to play “CHICKEN”….especially on the 65mph, 40 mile stretch of I-90 between Westfield and Lee.
Looks like he’ll be late for his appointment…again. When will Ted learn to call Ballard Taxi and Polish Food Co.
I just got here. I found some old photos from a Christmas party where I wore the same pale green satin hostess gown that I sent to wear for the one this year at my daughter’s new house. There are 2 photos, and this one with other people should help me decide JUST how long ago it was. The 4 people are now all deceased (my younger brother, my dad, his dad and mom).
Morning Stel. Just checking in myself to see if anyone was up and around yet. Seems so many of have become night owls . I’m sure you are going to be swamped this week with Christmas shoppers.Speaking of swamp, I’d better get going swamping out the house and getting it, and my galleon, The Irish Rover. in ship- shape for the holidays. I’ll be over in a little bit,for some more Christmas lights.See ya !
That was the dress, and I have an upside down cake (my dad’s fav) with the pineapple silces died green and the red marashino cherries- shaped like a Christmas tree.
Ah, I see Linguist is here and I checked last night and he asked about my coffee. I have a little 3 cup Italian style expresso pot and sent a bigger one to his house for this trip (both that and my snow boots from Target online, just enough for free shipping). I also have a vacuum pack of Bustelo in my carry-on.
I will need my lover’s and my kids help in dating that party, but as I see that I still had those roller shades with fabric that I glued on, it means that I still had the avacado green carpeting. I’m guessing it was around 1979 or 80, as I was divorced in 75. Clothes that I design and make, I DO tend to keep around for a while. I see my little brother was wearing one of those “photo print” shirts; that was a 70s thing – right?
@Susan, I just checked out your links; seems I’m not the only one thinking back to the 70s. My 4 kids were all in school, I divorced my crazy Cuban and got a good job AND a good man.
In the interest of full disclosure, the first two relatively brief ones were the result of youthful passion and poor judgement. They are now deceased. The third ( which lasted 20 years ) was complicated and the divorce came at a time when we were both going through a lot of changes. We haven’t communicated since the divorce was finalized in ‘96. The fourth really doesn’t count, in that it was a marriage of convenience to assist the other party in obtaining insurance for her very young but very ill child – she now a big strapping teenager – and to keep her from being sent back to England. My girlfriend at the time, knew, and approved of the situation.BTW I have lived off and on with this lady for 14 years and although she’s moved to another state, because of employment, we remain good friends. So it’s now just the ole Captain and his crew, and his friends and neighbors on Ballard Street and his faithful pets Zeke, the Zebra, and Pierre le Nez. ( aka Pete the Beak ) his parrot.Oh, yeah, there’s the 90 lb. old white APBT who hangs out, eats my food , thinks his a lap dog, and because he was born deaf, doesn’t give a damn what I say !
I’m glad no one in my family drives so crazy! The reason I was looking though old photos last night was that dress. I picked that out (among the red ones) from my closet a few weeks ago when deciding what I want to wear for various evenings out on this trip. I was surprised that one was older than the burgundy taffeta (I designed in 1990).
Thanks, today writing note to mailman, calling pool guy to keep an eye on my pumps (want him to schedule one service call after Christmas – more if there is a serious storm). Also want to put my citrus pole in front by the orange tree so neighbors can use the recipe I gave them.
Thanks, Linda. I was just scanning 3 photos I found of what I painted all around my kids room (other ones are missing in the series). Hard to see unless I post full size as they are so faded that the path hardly shows. I painted the walls light blue flat and the path was flagstones drawn in black marker (starting at the dock (right at one corner of the room). I used lots of red and white strips in the painting (matching the curtains and bed linens). Room had a door in center of one wall, facing big window. At one side of door is Capt. Hook’s ship with Beany Boy and Cecil the Seaserpent. Above the dock on adjoining wall is Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, with Rocky Squirrel above a tenement building (Bullwinkle in the window), Pinocchio and Jiminey Cricket headed to the dock
As for the balladeers – I do skip over a lot but, on the other hand, I enjoy getting a glimpse into your lives. I often mention comments from here like something I heard from a friend. Ballard Street has become kind of a magical place to enter and enjoy. You welcome all those that enter but never force anyone to participate. You are all very special to have the relationship you do. And you usually get in a few comments about the comic. I think JVA has got to love your enthusiasm for his humor.
My youngest son was born in Sept 62 so this shot is Halloween of 63 with older brothers as my black cats so I was a devil with lipstick and black pencil. You can all see the combo of animal cartoons, including Top Cat and Lady with Tramp, but above are Alvin and other chipmunks in the yard of that tenement, while Jack (only beanstalk shows here) climbs and the giant foot is at ceiling. Cinderella’s coach rolls past on the way up to the castle far behind (just before the corner). Window wall is dark here (photo is missing) but 3 little pigs are there with a wolf blowing on the straw shack.
That photo of the window wall is part of my fav tales and I can see this is tiresome to some, so I’ll discuss more sometime when it is related to the topic. I have been a painter and crafter most of my life. Not going near FB right now because people there know where I live and I can post there when I return.
“Wow, you’ve returned with a vengeance !!Great photo’s – (funny too)”++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Thanks!! And, you too (your return and your photos!!)!
I think you may need a new product I’ve just started carrying in my salon.I have, in fact, acquired exclusive distribution rights in Ballard County.Actually, I highly recommend an appointment, first, for my full salon treatment, in stubborn cases like yours, (Now, don’t be embarrassed..)but the cream is very useful after that for prevention, and will successfully treat most minor outbreaks.
@Essex, Sorry I called your art collection Kitsch! But velvet Elvis and poker playing dogs? A little goes a way, just sayin! I know I’m only an amateur but one of these days I will find a reason in a cartoon or just post for the H of it more of my murals, stained glass, ceramics and jewelry. This site is totally fun!
Sadly, of late, it’s JVA inspired zany community of Ballard Street denizens has been transformed. There was a time when zany goings on were at least tangentially related to the day’s comic. That character is being deteriorated. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>My friend, you are all too correct, and I am as guilty as anyone else for lapses into reality better suited for a chat room.Perhaps my inability to upload clever pictures like many of you, or to be as clever and witty forces me to relate to people on this site as family.Have no fear, I’m outta here !
@Linguist, I ditto Essex! It is good to hear the background and history of those with whom you chat. I liked hearing about your various marriages/divorces even tho’ I had just one and I decided just to call my new man my Lover after discussing with him (we both have grown children and would never remarry). I still refer to him as Boyfriend to some sensitive people. I just refer to him as partner on my FB and never post travel plans there where “friends of friends” can see everything. I realise that I’m too chatty and just have a need to express to people who I feel some connection with.
ya know I never got to bake any of my doggie biscuits for his (Linguist’s) poor dog that just has had his 9th birthday…I thought I would make some shaped like the old fashioned hearing aid horns…and regular bone shapes too…perhaps the Good Captian Linguist will just be on short mission and return anonce…bringing his zebra and parrot back with him as well as the aforesaid dog…
OK, but you were right. Come on down to the Tiki and have a glass of Redbreast Irish with me – or whatever beverage you prefer.Had a rough day and am a bit testy. Maybe a wee bit of Brain Bleach might help ?
THAT’S MORE LIKE IT! And if Susan’s spell check works here I will try when I return. Just printed my boarding pass (that (&%(%( number they require was not in email they sent to me; had to call and talk to someone!Speaking of dog treats, I had to teach my next door neighbor about training her dog “4 feet on the floor” and a “piece of a treat” (not the whole darn thing). Hope she gets him slimmer and better behaved (gosh I watch too much TV!)
@ Linda, different versions of 12 days are always fun. GRIMM (formerly Mother Goose and – ) has another one this year in King Comics (that is available in some local newspaper sites including http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/comics/king-comics.html?feature_id=Mgoose&feature_date=2012-12-14 or if that’s too long http://tinyurl.com/cj4aj6t
@Essex, I had to LOL when I reached the “first prize”. My new son in law will love that. I think I’ll just message him on Skype as my email is becoming such a pain with junk. He’s in Scotland again until the 24th.
I’m in the middle of a project….. but maybe I can head on down to the Tiki for a little break.
I deserve it.OK… no I don’t.But I’m taking one anyway.
Ess? …Ling?Anybody else still at the Tiki?
Ling I guess I have to say this to you in private before I get there …. wouldn’t want Essex to overhear, you know….
But when someone says “There was a time when zany goings on were at least tangentially related to the day’s comic. That character is being deteriorated.”
Welll……. all I will say is (nudge nudge) “consider the source.”
And the source of that quote singlehandedly designed probably close to half the businesses on Ballard Street, almost none of which have anything to do with the strip!
In fact, when he comes into the salon for his kitch treatment, I plan to ask whether he wants me help him get his tongue out of his cheek….I think it’s been stuck there for years.
Humming "ring ding didle idol de ig oh ring die didlly i oh ring die diddly i oh…….holding on to a big box of most excellent dog bone cookies shaped like the old horn hearing aids and a few of just bone shaped THe box is wrapped with puppie paper with a happy belated birthday doggie giftcard from pet smart under the bow. Dont lose it Linguist! Happy Belated Bday pretty guy!
Continuation of my last post…. phone rang…. sorry but I didn’t get a chance earlier….
But the other day I answered someone who had complained about the strip…and to my surprise, he DID come back, and very graciously thanked me for my take on it.
So this is to MagicWalnut, just in case she, too, does return.…MW — I’ve “met” you on other forums, and you seem quite nice….
I was sorry you felt we had “co-opted” this forum for “private” chat…I was going to answer you… but I got called away.I was going to say this isn’t “chat” cos our comments are often hours apart…and it isn’t “private” cos you’re quite welcome to join in.And I wanted to ask, respectfully, what it was that you wanted to do or say here that we were somehow preventing.
After all, if we’re taking something away from you, I want to stop.
But the thing is, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you post here…. or if you did it was brief. There’s plenty of room here for more comments… and in fact they get more of an audience here than on forums with fewer readers.
Anyway, I looked at your profile…. you haven’t said much anywhere on GoComics….but I note that your last 10 comments include several like this:“I’m in Michigan, Varnes, and we’ve had snow on the ground for almost a week!”
So, please, stay and join us… seems to me that you’d fit right in!
@ BEVWhat do you know about zebra treats or horse treats? They are both equines so I think they would work dont you?…and you know horses love carrots and apples, and pears too for that matter….and maybe some apple and some brazil nuts and almonds for the parrot…might make him a tad less cranky and then he might actually spew one or two of those “sea chanties” you hear Linguist rushing thru his hose to close the windows so that the neighbors dont hear the old “darlin”…I caught a line or two once, but not enough of it to determine if it was really raunchy or just funny…or both probably…lol….p.s. dont get grounded, we still have drinks to consume…in the spirit of the season as it were…right?…
Scanning the room for a comfortable (and A Safe Place to leave it) place to set the box for Linguist to take home, I see Vince and tell him that Lings drinks are on me, and to give Bev and SS what they want as well, personally I will take eggnog with a triple Captian Morgans please…oh, and Vince, keep this away from any dogs, please. Theres a $50 for you if you can protect it. Thanks buddy!
Thank you Vince, please serve Essex as well. They will all be along soon if not already here, hiding other treats for Linguists crew. We want them all happy. How about you Vince? Are you happy? You appear to be. You have quite an air about you…is that Axe that you have on?
ah Bev, for that I will switch my drink. Vince, for my second one, make it two shots of Captain Morgans and one shot of kahlua and then float some Irish Creme on top very gently…we gots ta save the eggnog…
oh I forgot to stop Vince…and two is my limit..and I still want to try Lings Dacquiri….ah well I guess its a 3 Dog Night…, maybe tonight that BS Taxi and Polish Food company will have a great evening fiscally…
I bet Dogs see into people more than we like to think…especially in some of our more shameful times…they see your heart, not what think…and I am sure he will love them whether he can read or not!
Perfect! Absolutely lovely. Vince has my gift. If you see Ling, tell him I owe him a hug. Ya’ll have a nice night now. That Dacuiri waz somthink or else…Vince call BS Taxi and Polish Food for me please…and can ya help a short person off this high stool? I knew I shoulda worn flats…thx…later taters…….
Of course you can eat them,Bev….um…well, if you like bran, oats, and molasses…and… well….the dried apples DID say “not for human consumption” but I don’t think they mean that, do you?
Bev’s dog sounds cute and like Susan and others I had checked the complainer and saw he seldom comments on anything in spite of reading a lot (some folks like being negative). My lover Skyped and was having me check out the cell phone contact (as he knows I’m not used to that) and I had to register and all that, so now it is past my bedtime. I’ll be back when I can ;-D

Bev — So glad it worked!

Btw…. cos of what I said (secretly, of course!) to the Linguist…..
It’s funny to me…. and it’s not just on Ballard St….this happens all the time in different comics forums…..
Somebody who is not a regular poster there comes along and asks a question, or registers a complaint.
3 or 4 or a dozen regulars jump in, to offer answers, justifications, help….whatever would answer in the particular situation.
All day, it may be debated, discussed, corrected…
But in most cases, the person who asked or complained never comes back.

Funny, Bev …. I was just saying some of the same!

Meanwhile…. I’m having an eggnog sort of night…but I think the Tiki signature banana daiquiri would work as well…
Monday night is usually slow…. so I may as well “help” drink that big grinderful…. (cough)…
Cheers, Bev!Linda!

Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago
Thank you Vince, please serve Essex as well. They will all be along soon if not already here, hiding other treats for Linguists crew. We want them all happy. How about you Vince? Are you happy? You appear to be. You have quite an air about you…is that Axe that you have on?
Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago
Exxes? ah well, thats one way to spell “drank” to ecess I suppose…lol…was truly just fumbling fingers…Sorry Essex….
Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago
ah Bev, for that I will switch my drink. Vince, for my second one, make it two shots of Captain Morgans and one shot of kahlua and then float some Irish Creme on top very gently…we gots ta save the eggnog…
SusanSunshine Premium Member almost 12 years ago
Sounds good, Ling…
Actually I think the power-grinder would be good for those… holds a couple of gallons.
We usually keep banana daiquiris coming from the BIG grinder…. everybody loves ’em and the tourists expect ’em.
It’s kinda large for new recipes….
Y’know…. having a bar owned by a monkey sheriff…. kinda made Ballard County an unexpected tourist destination.
Sigh…..
Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago
oh I forgot to stop Vince…and two is my limit..and I still want to try Lings Dacquiri….ah well I guess its a 3 Dog Night…, maybe tonight that BS Taxi and Polish Food company will have a great evening fiscally…
Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago
Oh Bev, between my dog cookies, your zebra yummies…now whose nuts? (for the cranky old parrot?)
SusanSunshine Premium Member almost 12 years ago
Linda and Bev…..
Since Ling’s dog is deaf, maybe he’s been taught to read. We’ll have to ask…cos if he can, he might like these:
Not sure they’d mean much to a dog who can’t read, though…
Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago
I bet Dogs see into people more than we like to think…especially in some of our more shameful times…they see your heart, not what think…and I am sure he will love them whether he can read or not!

Here I made something for Zeke, too….
Linda Solomon almost 12 years ago

SusanSunshine Premium Member almost 12 years ago
Of course you can eat them,Bev….um…well, if you like bran, oats, and molasses…and… well….the dried apples DID say “not for human consumption” but I don’t think they mean that, do you?
vldazzle almost 12 years ago
Bev’s dog sounds cute and like Susan and others I had checked the complainer and saw he seldom comments on anything in spite of reading a lot (some folks like being negative). My lover Skyped and was having me check out the cell phone contact (as he knows I’m not used to that) and I had to register and all that, so now it is past my bedtime. I’ll be back when I can ;-D
