Even without a cannon ball, the shockwave from a civil war cannon will kill anyone in a 90° cone in front for several hundred yards. (You can still get killed at a re-enactment firing blanks.) That’s why cannon needed to be in a line – if you were too far back, your shockwave would kill friendlies.
