Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for January 24, 2013
Transcript:
Gunther: "Moony Uni is huge! Look at some of these course offerings: "Practical robotics," "Theoretical physics," "Theater history," "Family studies"..." Gunther: "I hope we have classes together, Rosa" Rosa: "Me too, Gunther. Although my parents keep talking Ivy league schools..." Gunther: "Oh."
barbarasbrute almost 12 years ago
Theoretorically (sp) he should find himself a robot and they could put on a play about family life.

Greg better not be thinking about breaking up one of my favorite couples. And if he does, he’d better make sure Gunther gets a nice college girlfriend who is NOT Luann!

Oh, dear. :-(

looks like rosa’s harvard bound…
Mikeyj almost 12 years ago
Before anyone asks, yes, Gunther probably has the grades to get into an Ivy league college, however, he can’t afford it, he lives with his Mother who is too sick to work, much less pay for Harvard
Mikeyj almost 12 years ago
Greg just loves breaking up couples by having one of them leave for far away places… Bye bye Rosa…. Ok, now back to Luann & Gunth, the natural couple :p

You’re replying to Leviticus’s comment:
With his grades, if Gunther can get a scholarship and a couple of grants, he could go to an Ivy league school.^^True, but, then Gunther would be out of the strip, which would suck…. on the other hand, maybe Quill should go swimming and meet his first (and last) shark!

I have been saying Rosa will be gone one way or another, though I thought her family would move to South America or some such. Of course, she could tell her folks she wants to go to Mooney Uni, not an Ivy League college; that would be hellaciously cheaper, and she wants to be with Gunther. If her folks are sane and love her, they should be able to deal with it. This is ASSUMING that MU is a GOOD college and that she could take good classes there. Or Gunther could pull out all the stops and get to the Ivy League school by hook or by crook. But if he gets on the stick, he might qualify for scholarships or aid, as has been said by other posters. Depending on what he’d be taking his degree in, he could bite the bullet and take out a bit of loans, =provided= he was =positive= he could get a well-paying job upon graduation so he could pay the loans back.
*
Or he could marry Rosa and her folks could throw money at both of them. :-)
overtherainbow almost 12 years ago
I mean, if the lad’s into theoretical physics and robotics, there has to be some wiggy place that would hire him to do wacked science stuff. You’d think.
overtherainbow almost 12 years ago
She’s being oddly cool after throwing out this bombshell.
littlesky almost 12 years ago
Rosa could take her basic classes at Mooney U. Then transfer to an ivy league school for the rest. So she’d still be in the strip for awhile longer.
Of course she may only be saying this to try to get Gunther to make admit his feelings for her.
Angelalex242 almost 12 years ago
Gunther would need a full ride scholarship. In today’s society, he’s smoking crack if he thinks there’s any garuntee of a job no matter his degree. The only thing in his favor with finding a job? It’s a comic strip. RL doesn’t necessarily apply.
seyleigh almost 12 years ago
That could work. Bernice is smart, witty, and could be very pretty if she tried a little. Just like Gunther is smart, sweet, and could be very handsome if he tried a little.
overtherainbow almost 12 years ago
If either of Rosa’s folks is a graduate of an Ivy League school, Rosa might get preferential consideration for admission as a legacy student as well as a Hispanic female.
vwdualnomand almost 12 years ago
if gunther does good in school, applies to mit, and gets a full ride, maybe he will be the general area with rosa if she goes for ivy league. or, she can go the smith or holyoke or sarah lawrence.
Sisyphos almost 12 years ago
Uh-oh. Could this portend the end of Gunther and Rosa, just as he’s getting settled into the idea? He might have the grades for a scholarship, even to an Ivy; but. even so, he’d probably not want to be so far from Pittsville and mom….
KG1 almost 12 years ago
I suspect that none of them will go to MooNY. If like SUNY et all, the NY would mean that MooNY is in New York. The time difference given between Quill and Lu means they have to be on the west coast. Can’t see them all packing up to go cross country or splitting them apart.
38lowell almost 12 years ago
Harvard’s endowment is usually for “diverse’” students, which Gunther is NOT! Bye Rosa, whose parents are probably doctors & have the money to send her there. Enjoy Boston-5 degrees above zero today.
lisfnord almost 12 years ago
I don’t think this scenario will ever play out. the characters in this strip don’t age (like “for better….”). They’ll be in high school for years yet….
SheriCrest almost 12 years ago
I think college fairs are held in your junior year.

Maybe they will follow the Beverly Hills 90210 plot and all end up at the same local college.
ajnotales almost 12 years ago
Not to worry, Gunther … the Ivies have big, generous grants available for qualified cartoon characters.

Rosa – Harvard.Gunther -MIT.Close enough.
Mordock999 almost 12 years ago
Welllllllll. NOW we KNOW at LEAST one of the Characters that is about to be Written Out of Strip when Everybody goes to College: Rosa.
Don’t Worry Gunther. You can STILL keep the FIRES Burning with Rosa by having a STUPID “SmartPhone Romance”.

We have gone from five plots of possible sex and romance to a bunch of teenagers trying to decide which college they want to attend.

Rosa is an illegal alien

Easily solved…she goes to Harvard, he goes to MIT
mrsdonaldson almost 12 years ago
Gunther is smart enough to get scholarships! Why can’t he go to an Ivy League school?
LittleContessa almost 12 years ago
How about we just let Mr. Evan write the strip as he sees fit. After all, he has been doing it much longer than the rest of us. This is a comic strip and a well written one, not some soap opera.

Hmmm….just 6 days ago, it was spelled “Mooney,” with an “E”. Looks like higher education is changing fast!
brick10 almost 12 years ago
Gunther quickly realized that Rosa was truly “out of his (Ivy) League!”
Guilty Bystander almost 12 years ago
Gunther in the Army is “keeping it real?” He’d last maybe a week in boot camp. Now when it comes to Ox…
Where IS Bernice? Perhaps the least interesting character in this strip. I’ve been following Luann daily for months and she never does anything but come up with smartass one-liners when she ever DOES show up (usually on the Sunday fillers). Bernice isn’t vacuous, like Tiffany, just has no role to play unless she’s being used as a foil for Luann. Maybe her character was more developed at one time, but now? To swipe a line from Gertrude Stein: There’s no “there” there.

I just read your comment from yesterday about women buying a car. When I bought my first car "a ‘74 Dodge Charger’ my husband commented that it had a big motor. I said don’t all cars have a big motor? After all it’s not a lawn mower. Wouldn’t it need a big motor? I didn’t know. I just thought it was "cool.’
kenhense almost 12 years ago
I don’t think so. Rosa feels the tug to move on.
kenhense almost 12 years ago
That isn’t my handle on Gunther/Rosa. It was a high school romance. Most folks don’t wind up with their high school sweetie. They get a life somewhere and then they hitch up – or not. Rosa is a good person – I don’t believe she was thinking of dumping Gunther all along – she was just a high school girl with a boyfriend. Nevertheless I think Rosa is less interesting than most of the other characters. So she’s expendable – we can send her off to the Ivy League.
I am so ready for the end of high school in this strip. I see most of the characters going to a community college – or going to work. We’ll get some new characters (co-workers, bosses, etc) for the best of the Luann characters to deal with.
I already miss AE.

Delta needs to go on to a decent college, and probably can get all kinds of aid as BOTH a minority student and a female (unless things have changed since I was in college). Bernice needs to go on to college just to save her life and her sanity—she wouldn’t be satisfied with junior college. Gunther—if he gets to the right school, he could be the biggest success of all of them, Delta included, because Delta’s fields of interest, law and politics, would probably chew her up and spit her out. She’s too good a person to go into those snakepit professions. If she did, she wouldn’t be the same when she came out. Luann—she’s a poor student, in general, and I just don’t see her on fire to continue with acting or singing. I didn’t even KNOW she sang until she did those tracks with Quill. She magically got the lead in the play, which was a real “huh?” kind of thing. Good for her, it was fun, except for the very painful jealousy and moping on Gunther’s part. Anyway, for a character that is never seen singing any other time in the strip’s history, it doesn’t look like she’s that serious about it. She’ll waste some time in junior college and continue to obsess about boys. Tiffany—if she plays it right, she could be makeup artist to the stars, like someone else said, and have an interesting life in Hollywood. She already could probably teach courses in cosmetology, so if she gets out of the small pond and learns how to get on in the real world outside Pittsville, she could go somewhere. She’s got organizational skills and is very talented with makeovers. And who knows? She still might pursue her dream and become a model—she wants it badly enough, even though it’s an unhealthy lifestyle. If the draft is reinstated, which there is talk about, Ox and Knute will probably be drafted. It’d suck for both of them. Actually, all the boys will probably be drafted, except for Gunther, as the family’s only son. Isn’t that how it works?
*
But then, since this is a comic strip, nothing will happen for another 25 years or so. I’ll probably not live long enough to see where they all go.
KasparV almost 12 years ago
Go away. PLEASE.

Wonder why Rosa never told Gunther before today that her folks keep talking about Ivy League schools? Gunther clearly was under the impression that they were going to the same school—they were just looking for a school to go to. Why didn’t she steer him toward looking into financial aid at Ivy League schools? If this were real life, I’d say she’s losing interest. Drat, you just can’t call it in fiction.
Lion_Tamer almost 12 years ago
Does Gunther look like he’s gotten taller and thinner recently. He’s finally getting his adult makeover by Greg.
junemmoffatt almost 12 years ago
I wonder if this forecasts another age jump for Luann and company?

Harvard has for more scholarships than most universities. Gunth can do it.

Ivy League school?!!!!!!…geez Rosa getting real uppity isn’t she?!!!!!!!!
overtherainbow almost 12 years ago
Gunther still has his junior and senior years, and the summer in between, to invent a cold fusion machine in his garage and get accepted with a full ride to MIT or wherever wiggy science geeks go. Or math geeks. He could stop sweating over girls and give his future some brain time and see what he can do to stack the deck in his favor.
*
(And I =am= aware that if he invented cold fusion in his garage he’d be disappeared—I was just joshing there.)

Rosa does strike as the type who would be in that situation.
