Iâm a New Yorker. About 20 years ago, I was in Montreal, and noticed a number of small restaurants with signs that said âWe serve American-style lunch.â Being hungry, I stopped in one to find out what an âAmerican-style lunchâ is to a Canadian. It was a slice of pepperoni pizza (which I think of as an Italian-style lunch) with a side of french fries (aka âchipsâ) and mayonnaise (which no American that Iâve ever met would even think of serving with french fries; ketchup maybe, but never mayonnaise).
