Is that the way spelling bees work? I assumed that the judges had one spelling that was âcorrectâ, so if there was any uncertainty it was up to the student to ask. (Are the judges allowed to reply with a sentence that includes homonyms? ;) )
As weâll find out in a few days, Charlie Brown was thinking of Willie Mays. It probably didnât occur to him â or to Charles Schulz â that âMaysâ could also be the plural of âMay,â making it a valid word. (Spelling bees never use proper names.).I always had a soft spot for this particular storyline. When the movie âA Boy Named Charlie Brown,â based on this story, came out in 1969, I had just won a schoolwide spelling bee. (Winning word: feud.) Unfortunately, I lost the district bee (losing word: dawdle; I thought I had it right, but the proctor said I didnât pronounce the second D) and didnât go on the to the state competition.
Poor old Charlie Brown. You really have to feel sorry for him, especially the way he looks in the third panel. If youâre lucky, youâll never go through life without any instance where you think everyone is laughing at you.
this is like âCarrieâ a decade later huh where everyone laughed at her and she burned down the school gym on prom night huh??âŠgeez I didnât know Violet was mean like Lucy was I thought she was decent her and Patty (not Peppermint Patty)âŠI know how this is going to end Charlie Brown yells at the teacher and he gets sent to the principalâs office..geez poor Charlie
Violet, someday you will be a bitter middle aged woman after your husband abandons you and the children to run off with his 22 year old secretary. And empties out all the bank accounts and mortgages the house out from under you before he goes. And Charlie Brown will be happily married to The Little Red Haired Girl.

One consolation out of all of this: He becomes Champion Charlie Brown in the feature length movie. So whoâs the fool now, Violet?
dreadlokz about 12 years ago
Yeah, Lucy is probably gonna call Charlie a blockhead, like normal.

True it appears there are 3 spellings for it, maize, maze and Mays. The plural of May (the month). And good old Willie Mays.

Yes, Violet and Lucy are just like Jobâs so-called friends. âGreat comforters you are.â But there will be other spelling bees.
pouncingtiger about 12 years ago

Actually, he lost there, too. he biffed the word âbeagleâ by misspelling it âbeagelâ â and Snoopy was sitting right there in the front row!
