Cathy: How much is this hat? Saleswoman: That depends. Cathy: Depends on what? Saleswoman: We've decided to sell clothes the way the airlines sell plane tickets. Every hat in the store has up to 20 different prices at any given time that change weekly, daily or sometimes minute to minute. How much you pay for your hat depends on how desperate we are to unload it versus how desperate you are to buy it. Hats purchase 21 days in advance of hat season are, of course, cheaper than last-minute hat buys...and all prices are lower if you plan to keep the hat over a Saturday night. Besides the prices we give you, there are 1,500 internet sites selling the same hat, all at different prices, including hat auctions. Once you've paid, any exchange of the hat will be a minimum $50 fee, even if all we have to do is say,"Here's another hat". Cathy: I don't care what it costs! Just sell me the hat! Saleswoman: OOPS. Sorry. The last of our hats got reserved while we were chatting...

The computer has crashed and hats have been cancelled all over the country.
This actually is the way a lot of hats are sold. This season’s fantastically valued treasures quickly become last season’s drug-on-the-market.

Yup—pretty much. Shopping should be a straightforward experience, but in real life (and especially in “Cathy Land”) …

“I don’t care what it costs! Just sell me the (insert item name here)!” Those words are music to the ears of every unscrupulous salesperson out there, selling anything that you can possibly imagine ….. and for any price they want to sell it for as long as there’s at least ONE person stupid enough to agree to it. Wonder if she’d still be willing to buy that simple little hat if the store was charging “First Class – $240.00” for it? Probably. After all, she did say she didn’t care about the cost. Cathy is the very epitome of the old expression: “A fool and their money are soon parted.” I’m not surprised she’s always crying to her C.P.A. at tax time about how “broke” she is. I would be, too, if I spent MY money the way she spends HERS!

And the way I handle airlines these days…I don’t fly. Buy the hat somewhere else, Cathy.
