80% of beer sales come from the same two corporate daddies, due to Bush’s lax enforcement of anti-monopoly laws. Obama looks to be a good bit stronger in support of the free market with his recent opposition to yet another merger (the complete buyout of Corona). Not saying it’s great beer, but it’s to no one’s interest except the owners’ to permit monopolies.
Amazing to me that with the high quality beer now widely available in almost every market in North America that people still drink that mass-produced crap.
Monopoly and “mass production” does lead to uniformity, though usually, not quality. That doesn’t have to be the case, just as “Institutional” food, serving large numbers doesn’t have to be bad, but usually is.
The the leap to urine analogy does bring up the question of how bad cooks can also turn raw product into “end product” without passing it through the body.
Picked up a “Periodic Table of Beer Styles” and my life is far better. There are just way too many good beers out there to drink Bud – from Polygamy Porter to Left Hand’s Milk Stout to Shiner’s Wild Hare and a good Lawnmower from St Arnold’s.
