The exact meaning of “scuttle” in the naval context is to deliberately sink one’s own ship or ships. This is done usually to prevent capture.

I can’t believe I’m reading the same comic that my grandparents use to read in the 60’s. They actually read it in a newspaper. I still like it, though.
