I never could get up the rope.

wondered what was the point of the climbing rope?

You’re thinking of Les, who long ago became the real star of Funky. Maria started out in the right position, but thrashed around too much.

Being scared of heights I so hated the rope.

I couldn’t climb that darned rope either. Hated the days that the ropes were down in P.E.. My best friend could easily climb them though (and she definitely wasn’t a bully, just had a lot to do with body type). On the other hand, I was much better at other activities, usually involving a ball.

I always ended up with rope burns.

What I hated even more, with all my hate, was the rings. My nightmare was being forced to do a ‘skin the cat.’ It wasn’t on me to do.

I could not do ‘skin the cat’ but our psychotic gym teacher couldn’t accept that. Everybody MUST be equally capable of every task set before them. He pushed me through it with his hands- one time. I never could do it on my own.
