Mom, there are times when honesty is not the best policy. Even a cookie shaped like John Philip Sousa can’t substitute for the approval Petey seeks and needs!
I agree that Mom could have given Petey a little confidence booster that he needs so badly. Alice will probably fight having to take off her pretty party dress.
“if ever there were the antithesis of the delicate, reedy music of the oboe it would be . . . John Philip Sousa’s marching music.”Yes, I’d guess that Petey didn’t get his musical talent from Mom. She should hunt for the Mozart cookie – or J. S. Bach, or R. Strauss or anyone on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oboe#Notable_classical_works_featuring_the_oboe
All I could think of was how rude mom was. When my daughter got antsy and obnoxious like Alice, I picked her up and carted her off. Interesting, though, how the dress didn’t get real itchy UNTIL it was Petey’s turn. In fact, I have sat in the far back so that I could get out with the least amount of fuss just for situations like that. In regards to liking Alice. I don’t. I find her to be spoiled and tempermental, always getting her way. The parents are no better as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve been in his (Sousa’s) house! The current occupants include a member of the Marine Corps Band (Sousa’s group) and a dog named J.P. in honor of the home’s previous owner. For a nerd like me, it was pretty cool to visit.

The dress just HAD to be itchy and ruin the oboist’s big moment.

You and your big mouth, Alice.

Don’t feel bad, Petey. After all, this is how John Coltrane got his start.

Having gone through the trepidation of childhood recitals, I can say this is one time Mom should have lied here and told him he did great.

Such are the trials of a musician.

Maybe the dress was only itchy when she was sitting down…

One of those instances where neither lying nor telling the truth isn’t going to help.

Point is it’s a comic strip. It’s what happens when Mom gets frazzeled trying to do three things at once(remember Grandma?). Life goes on . . . .

I wish Richard would weigh in on this. It is unusually cruel for him.
